As two-time Tony winner Matthew Broderick prepares for the April 24 opening of Nice Work If You Can Get It, Broadway.com asked readers which of Broderick’s prior roles is their favorite. Choosing from an array of Broadway, film and TV performances, fans narrowed down the charming actor’s repertoire to three choice roles. Check out the results below!
1. Ferris Bueller (Ferris Bueller’s Day Off) – 35%
For some, Broderick will always be Ferris Bueller, the high school senior who skipped school and had the coolest day ever (hello, “Twist and Shout” parade scene!). The 1986 film cemented Broderick’s superstar status and became one of the top grossing films of the year.
2. Leo Bloom (The Producers) – 32%
Broderick received a Tony nomination for his work as neurotic accountant Leo Bloom in the blockuster Broadway musical The Producers. The musical, co-starring Nathan Lane, opened at the St. James Theatre in April 2001 and went on to win a record-breaking 12 Tony Awards! In 2005, Broderick and Lane reprised their roles for Susan Stroman’s film adaptation.
3. Harold Hill (The Music Man) – 6%
Broderick starred as conman Harold Hill in the 2003 TV adaptation of the Tony-winning musical The Music Man. The ABC special, which co-starred Kristin Chenoweth as Marian Paroo, earned five Emmy nominations that year. Fun fact: Broderick’s real life wife Sarah Jessica Parker almost beat out Chenoweth for the role!
